Household Hazardous Waste Collection
Annual Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Collection Day
Date: Saturday October 11, 2025
Time: 8:00am to 12:00pm
Location: Sherborn Department of Public Works (DPW) Garage, 7 Butler Street
Registration: Registration opens Monday, September 8th.
General Information:
- Please see below for "What to Bring" and "What Not to Bring" to HHW day. As well as "What to Bring to the Transfer Station".
- Waste materials to be discarded should be placed in the trunk, hatch, or truck box, which must be opened (preferably without exiting the car) upon arrival for staff inspection.
- Please be patient - HHW day is operated by volunteers and friends of the Recycling Committee.
- If you are unable to attend the Annual Sherborn HHW day please visit the HHW - Alternative Sites for alternatives.
Charles River HHW Consortium Information:
- Consortium members are welcome with a Visitor Authorization Form from your hometown community coordinator.
- Non-Sherborn residents without a completed and signed authorization form from their town of residence will be turned away!
- Out of town residents in the Charles River HHW Consortium include:
- Ashland
- Bellingham
- Franklin
- Medfield
- Dover
- Walpole
- Holliston
- Norfolk
- Please obtain a Town of Sherborn Visitor Authorization form from your hometown community coordinator before you come to Sherborn's Annual HHW day.

Annual Paper Shredding (Sherborn Residents Only)
Date: Saturday, October 11, 2025
Time: 9:00am to 12:00pm
Location: Sherborn Department of Public Works (DPW) Garage, 7 Butler Street
Registration: Registration opens Monday, September 8th.
Information:
- Paper Shredding is limited to the equivalent of four (4) "banker's" boxes" - per household. A "banker's box" is 24 inches deep by 12 inches wide by 10" high and holds approximately 2000 to 2500 8.5 inches by 11 inches sheets of paper - about the same as 2 normal grocery bags full.
- Paper to be shredded should be placed in the trunk, hatch, or truck box, which must be opened (preferably without exiting the car) upon arrival for staff inspection.
- Paper to be shredded must be surrendered to the shredding company for shredding - shredding may be witnessed, but no other resident participation in shredding will be allowed.
- Please be patient - HHW day is operated by volunteers and friends of the Recycling Committee.

What to Bring to the Transfer Station:
The following items are not accepted at the HHW day, but can be brought to the Sherborn Transfer Station (Residents Only):
- Water-Based Paint: Paints such as latex or acrylic are not hazardous. These paints can be dried up by pouring into a shallow box and adding kitty litter. When dry, take it to the Transfer Station and dispose as trash.
- Rechargeable Batteries or Automotive (lead acid - Pb) batteries.
- Alkaline batteries; they are not hazardous and can be disposed as trash.
- Used Motor Oil; used oil
- Fluorescent tubes and bulbs; fluorescent lamps
- Mercury-Containing Devices such as thermometers, thermostats, button batteries, etc.
What to Bring to HHW Collection Day:
LIMIT: 25 pounds (lbs) (dry) 25 gallons (liquid)

What Not to Bring to HHW Day:
The following items are not permitted at HHW Collection Day (or the Sherborn Transfer Station):
- No free mercury - To discuss safe disposal of free mercury, contact sherbornrecycling@gmail.com. "Free mercury" is any mercury that is not in a hermetically sealed container or glass bulb..DO NOT move free mercury in an unsealed container contact sherbornrecycling@gmail.com to arrange for a pickup at the location where the mercury is found.
- No Unwanted Medicines - For old or unneeded medications,contact the Recycling Committee at sherbornrecycling@gmail.com for disposal alternatives.
- No Medical waste, including Needles or Sharps - A number of regional collection sites are listed in the Mass.gov document linked here: Proper Use and Disposal of Needles and Syringes Be Smart. Be Careful. Be Aware. Be Safe. Sharps are NOT PERMITTED FOR DISPOSAL IN TRASH as of July 1, 2012, per FEDERAL LAW.
- No Ammunition, flares, fireworks, or anything containing gunpowder or other explosives. Call 508-651-7878 or contact sherbornrecycling@gmail.com to discuss other disposal options.
